About the Tango Society of Central Illinois
The Tango Society of Central Illinois, an affiliate of the Urbana Park District, is dedicated to promoting the tango culture of Argentina in Central Illinois and the Midwest. We focus primarily on the enjoyment of tango as a social dance. We host milongas (social dances) approximately monthly, and offer tango instruction through courses, workshops, and practicas. Most Tango Society activities are held at the Phillips Recreation Center, 505 W Stoughton, Urbana, IL.

The Tango Society of Central Illinois was founded by Tom and Nancy Ronquillo in October 1996 in Bloomington-Normal, IL. During the early years of the developing tango community in central Illinois, Tom and Nancy were active in promoting tango through public performances, hosting milongas, and teaching classes in both Bloomington-Normal and Urbana-Champaign.
In November 1999, Ron Weigel and Susana Vazquez Weigel initiated an affiliate agreement with the Urbana Park District to establish a branch of the Tango Society of Central Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Since that time the Tango Society has been hosting monthly milongas at the Phillips Recreation Center and at the University of Illinois.
In March 2001, the Tango Society held a fundraiser, consisting of performances by local dancers and invited guest performers, as well as a musical and educational program, to assist the Urbana Park District in purchasing the 'Tango' sculpture (above) which resides in the Wandell Sculpture Garden in Meadowbrook Park in Urbana.
In September 2001, the Tango Society began offering weekly classes at the Phillips Recreation Center.
Relationship with the Community
The Tango Society of Central Illinois is an affiliate of the Urbana Park District, sponsoring social dances and various modes of instruction in tango as part of the Urbana Park District recreational program.
The Tango Society of Central Illinois is also registered with the University of Illinois as a campus-community organization. This allows us to extend our social and education program directly to the University of Illinois campus.
